1. The Dow Jones industrial average .DJI closed down 216.95 points, or 1.43 percent, at 14,960.59. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index .SPX ended down 22.48 points, or 1.38 percent, at 1,608.90. The Nasdaq Composite Index .IXIC was down 43.78 points, or 1.27 percent, at 3,401.48.
