Market Summary -- 14th Jan 09

FTSE STI closed 1,761.82, down 14.43 points or 0.81% with a total volume of 1.02b and a total value of S$1.08b. Total number of advance vs decline was 137 vs 236. Of the 30 component index stocks, 5 closed positive, 21 closed negative and 4 remained unchanged. The 5 gainer component stocks were :-

2. DBS +0.170
3. HKLand US$ +0.080
4. ST Engg +0.040
5. Olam +0.010

The top 5 loser component stocks were :-

1. JSH 500US$ -0.420
2. UOB -0.180
3. SIA -0.140
4. Wilmar -0.120
5. Noble -0.110

US markets fell overnight and caused Asia bourses to open lower and traded lower for the day. Nikkei closed -4.79%, HSI -2.17% and SSE -1.95%. Though there was a period whereby HSI and STI both traded in the positive region but soon give up the gain and closed down. STI down 14.43% was dragged down by Commodity, Offshore/Marine and Property Stocks. Investors are maintaining cautious mode ahead of the corporate earnings. STI immediate support looks to be at the 1,750 level which it almost hit and rebound from there this morning. If 1,750 can't hold, next level would be 1,710. Resistance for the moment is the psychological level of 1,800.
