Market Summary -- 30th Jan 09

FTSE STI closed 1,746.47, down 20.25 points or 1.15% with a total volume of 826M and a total value of S$962M. Total number of advance vs decline was 169 vs 166. Of the 30 component index stocks, 11 closed positive, 17 closed negative and 2 remain unchanged. The top 5 gainer component stocks were :-

US markets fell last night due to bad economic data and caused Asia bourses to mainly traded in negative region. Nikkei closed -3.12% but HSI closed +0.94%. STI down 1.15% mainly due to banking stocks and SingTel that weight down the index. Investors still very nervous with the US stimulus bill going to the US Senate level for approval on next Monday and tonight US 4Q08 GDP number.
