Market Summary -- 12th Mar 09

FTSE STI closed 1,493.53, down 11.98 points or 0.8% with a total volume of 1.06b and a total value of S$604M. Total number of advance vs decline was 123 vs 268. Of the 30 component index stocks, 8 closed positive, 4 remained unchanged and 18 closed negative. The top 5 gainer component stocks were :-

2. JMH 400US$ +0.360
3. F&N +0.060
4. KepLand +0.045
5. Olam +0.040

The top 5 loser component stocks were :-

1. Jardine C&C -0.240
2. JSH 500US$ -0.200

US markets closed relatively flat yesterday and that didn't give Asia bourses any clear signals of another round of buying up. Instead investors chose to take profit off from yesterday rally. Nikkei closed -2.41% and HSI +0.59%. STI opened slightly positive but when investors chose to take profit, index slided into the negative region closing -0.8%. Sentiments were again hit due to Oriental Century concern of financial issue on the company and as such S-Shares again under heavy selling pressure. In the STI half-year index review, ComfortDelgro and SMRT are added into the STI index stocks to replace KepLand and Yanlord
