Market Summary -- 1st Jun 09

FTSE STI closed 2,380.07, up 50.99 points or 2.19% with a total volume of 3.53b and a total value of S$2.45b. Total number of advance vs decline was 520 vs 108. Of the 30 component index stocks, 27 closed positive, 2 closed negative and 1 remained unchanged. The top 5 gainer component stocks were :-

2. Jardine C&C +0.760
3. SGX +0.410
4. CityDev +0.350
5. JSH 500US$ +0.300
5. DBS +0.300

The 2 loser component stocks were :-

1. SingTel -0.080
2. StarHub 0.010

US markets up at least 1% last Friday and Asia bourses took the cue to be positive. All trading positively for the day with Nikkei closed +1.63%, SSE +3.36% and HSI +3.95%. STI trading in a range between 2,340 to 2,390 for the day with investors snapping up blue chips in particular property stocks to allow STI closed +2.19%. Temasek took a placement position in Olam at $1.60/share also lifted the sentiment of commodity stocks. The only drag of the component stocks for the day was the 2 telco SingTel and StarHub. Investors are awaiting for the decision of the fate of GM tonight as well as unemployment date at the end of the week.
