Market Summary -- 21st Jul 09

FTSE STI closed 2,454.33, down 1.82 points or -0.07% with a total volume of 2.1b and a total value of S$1.71b. Total number of advance vs decline was 223 vs 284. Of the 30 component index stocks, 11 closed positive, 15 closed negative and 4 remained unchanged. The top 5 gainer component stocks were :-

US markets continued the rally yesterday night and after market closed TI posted another better than expected earnings. Asia bourses opened positively in the morning following US rally and with the exception of Nikkei, mist closed in the red after profit taking kicked in. Nikkei closed +2.73%, SSE -1.64% and HSI -0.003%. STI was trading in a range between positive and negative throughout the day staying above the 2,424 level. Profit takings were seen on the blue chips as bank, property, offshore/marine and commodity stocks were mixed. All eyes will be on Wall Streets tonight when more tech ompanies will be releasing their earnings and also US Federal Reserve Chairman's report on US financial policies and economy to the House Financial Services Committee.
