Market Summary -- 27th Jul 09

FTSE STI closed 2,576.66, up 43.23 points or +1.71% with a total volume of 3.19b and a total value of S$2.04b. Total number of advance vs decline was 419 vs 166. Of the 30 component index stocks, 17 closed positive, 9 closed negative and 4 remained unchanged. The top 5 gainer component stocks were :-

US markets were mixed last Friday with Nasdaq ending a 12-day positive close. The mixed closing however did not stop Asia bourses stop their rally too. Investors continued buying into stocks with anticipation of more better than expected corporate earnings from the US for this week. Nikkei closed +1.45%, SSE +1.86% and HSI +1.35%. STI ended the day with a +1.71% gain with gain from banks leading the rally in a heavy volume trading day. S-shares also gather momentum in moving up taking cue from both SSE and HSI continued moving up. However, based on value/volume ratio, STI experienced strong interest in penny stocks play.
