Market Summary -- 14th Oct 10

FTSE STI closed 3,195.02, down 7.14 points or -0.22% with a total volume of 2.04b and a total value of S$2.14b.  Total number of advance vs decline was 240 vs 281.  Of the 30 component index stocks, 9 closed positive, 20 closed negative and 1 remained unchanged.  The top 5 gainer component stocks were :-

3. SGX  +0.230
4. Olam  +0.070
5. HKLand US$  +0.050

The top 5 loser component stocks were :-

1. JMH 400US$  -0.380
2. SIA  -0.200
3. Jardine C&C  -0.180

5. F&N  -0.080

US markets closed positive yesterday night due to better than expected earning from JPMorgan and Intel.  Asian bourses mostly traded in positive region with Nikkei closed +1.91%, SSE +0.64% and HSI +1.68%.  STI hit a new intra-day high of 3,220.50 but failed to hold on to the gain as flattish opening in the European market in the afternoon and investors selling off to take profit force STI to close -0.22%.  Only 9 out of the 30 component index stocks managed to close positive.  This morning, Singapore Government announced its 3Q GDP and fell more than expected of -19.80% but the Government maintains 2010 GDP growth of between 13% - 15%.  Investors will be looking at more corporate earnings from US companies namely Google while more of those from Singapore next week.
