1. US stock markets eked out gains on Thursday after investors digested disappointing data on manufacturing and jobs and better-than-expected news on the ailing housing sector. The Dow Jones Industrial Average barely tipped into positive territory before the market bell, rising 4.39 points, or 0.04 per cent, to finish at 11,989.83. The broad-market Standard & Poor's 500 index advanced 2.91 points, or 0.22 per cent to 1,299.54, while the tech-rich Nasdaq index was the best performer, up 15.78 points, or 0.58 per cent at 2,755.28
