Market Summary -- 21st Jan 11

FTSE STI closed 3,184.60, down 20.88 points or -0.65% with a total volume of 1.80b and a total value of S$1.84b.  Total number of advance vs decline was 183 vs 274.  Of the 30 component index stocks, 6 closed positive, 19 closed negative and 5 remained unchanged.  The top 5 gainer component stocks were :-

US markets closed in the red yesterday night after another bank Morgan Stanley reported a miss expectation earning despite a better than expected jobless claims data.  Asian bourses were mostly in the red for the day as concern of China might introduce more tightening to curb inflation weighed on the markets.  Nikkei closed -1.56%, SSE bucked the trend with +1.41% and HSI -0.53%.  STI fell below the 3,200 psychological closing down 0.65% with only 6 of the index stocks managed to register a gain.  The next level would be 3,160.  A selling off from commodity stocks led the decline whereas property stocks also under selling pressure as concern of tightening measures weighed on.
