Market Summary -- 7th Jan 11

FTSE STI closed 3,261.35, down 18.35 points or -0.56% with a total volume of 2.44b and a total value of S$1.93b.  Total number of advance vs decline was 233 vs 313.  Of the 30 component index stocks, 7 closed positive, 20 closed negative and 3 remained unchanged.  The top 5 gainer component stocks were :-

1. UOB  +0.200
2. SIA  +0.100
3. KepCorp  +0.100
4. Wilmar  +0.060
5. DBS  +0.040

The top 5 loser component stocks were :-

1. JMH 400US$  -2.500
2. Jardine C&C  -1.140
3. JSH 500US$  -1.000
4. HKLand US$  -0.140
5. Olam  -0.090

US markets pull back yesterday night when jobless claim increased more than previous month and investors taking off profit from the recent run up.  Asian bourses were mixed for the day.  Nikkei closed +0.11%, SSE +0.52% and HSI -0.42%.  STI broke a 4-day positive closing as profit taking kicked in for the blue chips causing STI to close down 18.35 points with only 7 of the component stocks managed to close positive.  Index were dragged down by the Jardine group of stocks.  Investors will be looking at tonight US unemployment rate data before next week earning season starts.
