Market Summary -- 21st Jul 11

FTSE STI closed 3,138.51, up 11.98 points or +0.38% with a total volume of 1.53b and a total value of S$1.53b.  Total number of advance vs decline was 278 vs 222.  Of the 30 component index stocks, 19 closed positive, 8 closed negative and 3 remained unchanged.  The top 5 gainer component stocks were :-

5. F&N  +0.050

The top 5 loser component stocks were :-

US markets were closed negative in a very quiet session when US debt ceiling overshadowed corporate earnings.  Asian bourses were mainly in the negative with profit taking and remained cautious after HSBC revealed China's PMI for July might continue decline.  Nikkei closed +0.04%, SSE -1.01% and HSI -0.07%.  STI managed to close +0.38% with 19 of the index stocks registering positive closing led by banking stocks.  European bourses were negative as investors monitoring the outcome of the EU summit to resolve the EU debt issue.  For US, the debt ceiling will again in the spot light tonight along with corporate earnings and economic data.  As long as the debt ceiling issue yet to resolve, investors will feel uneasy to re-enter the market.  For STI, upside for the time being would be 3,150 which is the upper boundary of the triangle.  Support will be at 3,080.
