Market Summary -- 5th Oct 11

FTSE STI closed 2,528.71, down 2.31 points or -0.09% with a total volume of 1.08b and a total value of S$1.27b.  Total number of advance vs decline was 248 vs 204.  Of the 30 component index stocks, 19 closed positive and 11 closed negative.  The top 5 gainer component stocks were :-

4. GLP  +0.060
5. DBS  +0.060

The top 5 loser component stocks were :-

1. Jardine C&C  -0.720

US markets advanced almost 2% on average in a last hour rebound as news of ECB going to restructure banks to tackle the damage done by Greece default surfaced.  Earlier on US Fed Chief testified in front of lawmakers regarding the US economy.  What was presented by Fed Chief was rather positive as indicating US Fed is ready to act should US economy failed but cautious on the crisis in Europe as that is beyond what they could do.  The EU debt crisis still weigh on investors mind for the time being.  Asian bourses were traded positive earlier on but soon giving up the gain as investors selling off taking profit and funds taking the opportunities to sell off also.  Nikkei closed -0.86% while SSE and HSI both closed for holiday.  STI gave up earlier gain of almost 1% and closed -0.09%.
